Indonesia's Ministry of Communications and Digital have temporarily suspended the world (formerly WorldCoin) and its digital identity platform, World ID, citing the issue of registration and the possibility of violations of local electronic systems regulations.
According to a statement on May 4, the department has confirmed that it has suspended its Electronic Systems Organizer Registration Certificate (TDPSE) for both WorldCoin and World IDs. The suspension comes after government agencies discovered conflicts about how the project is run domestically.
The ministry said Pt Terang Bulan Abadi, one of Worldcoin's local affiliates, was unable to register as a recognized electronic systems organizer.
This status is a must for digital platforms that seek to operate legally in Indonesia. Instead, the project reportedly ran its operations under a license from another company, Pt Sandina Abadi Nusantara, raising concerns about the misuse of identity and the gap in compliance.
Alexander Sabbah said that Director of Digital Space Director Alexander Sabbah would summon both entities to further investigate. He noted that the move is preventative and intended to protect the public from the potential harm posed by unregistered digital service providers.
Sabar also emphasized that all digital platforms must take full responsibility for their activities and operate transparently within the national legal framework.
The advancement of World Coin
This suspension marks another regulatory obstacle for World Coin, which seeks to expand its presence around the world.
Over the past year, this project has faced scrutiny of regulations from Authorities in several countries, including Kenya, Germany and Hong Kongvetting data collection practices.
Despite these set-offs, the platform has recently ensured significant growth by expanding its identity verification system to the US.
The service is currently available in six cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville and San Francisco. There, residents can see their human identity through their world ID.
Beyond that, World has announced partnerships with companies such as Visa, Tinder, Kalshi, and Morpho, exploring new applications for its technology and driving wider adoption.
