Without much effort, President Donald Trump provided government efficiency (DOGE) with the right to clean up government contracts, grants and loans. The move further integrates financial decisions under a centralized, AI-driven, unexplained office with unprecedented power. The development coincided with the highly anticipated release of the file at Jeffrey Epstein last week and the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Executive orders can be read like a daily effort to reduce waste and increase transparency. However, if you look closely, you will notice much larger changes. This further shifts the foundations of government operations into AI systems and unelected technocrats.
Doge's new power
The executive order outlines a radical expansion of Doge's strength over federal spending.
The directive requires that the heads of each agency work together with the leads of the Doge team. The goal is as follows:
We build a centralized technical system within the institution to seamlessly record all payments issued by the institution according to each contract and grant that the institution covers.
The system must include a mechanism to stop payments that are not written justification from the authorization officer.
Orders also require a comprehensive review of all federal agreements and grants.
The head of each agency will consult with the agency's Doge team lead to consider all existing covered contracts and grants and terminate or modify such covered contracts and grants (including renegotiation) in unison with appropriate and applicable law.
This provision empowers Doge to unilaterally influence government funding across a wide range of sectors. The framework may expand further, but for now the main goals are education and foreign aid, with the orders explicitly singled out for scrutiny.
Doge is also involved in creating “guidance on signing new contracts and modifying existing contracts.”
Additionally, the directive freezes 30 days of agency credit card spending. We also require a review of Realporty Leases to determine whether to exercise your termination rights. Finally, it is necessary to cooperate with government properties that are deemed “no longer necessary” to identify and dispose of government-owned properties.
Risks of Doge expansion
In his order, Trump stressed that reforms are necessary to redistribute spending to promote efficiency and advance my administration's policies. However, such integration of financial surveillance under Doge avoiding the exclusive power of Congress' wallets, also entrenching unconstitutional federal spending while creating AI-driven mechanisms for selective reimbursement and political manipulation.
Unconstitutional expenditure
Instead of returning spending decisions to the parliament they belong to, Doge centralizes financial management within unelected techno bureaucracy. The preservation of politically preferred spending is at risk with selective scrutiny of others.
Education funding. The Constitution does not allow federal authorities to fund universities, research institutions, or public education. If fiscal responsibility is the true goal, the government must abolish all federal education spending.
Foreign aid. Orders will undergo additional scrutiny of foreign contracts. However, the administration has allowed billions of dollars in “urgent” foreign aid to Israel to continue checking. If foreign institutions waste taxpayer funds, the government must reevaluate all foreign financial commitments. Scrutiny cannot be applied selectively, allowing favorable spending to continue to be checked.
Political weapons?
It is clear that Doge's target review of education and foreign contracts is not a principle enforcement of constitutional restrictions. What's more, bad actors can easily weaponize the system. Even assuming the noble intentions of Doge and its de facto head Elon Musk, its built-in functionality could be directed towards people.
Censorship tool. Unelected surveillance systems can suspend federal grants to universities. The same mechanism can financially strangle other institutions, industries, or organizations based on the political motivations of those who program the technology.
Hypocritical foreign funding. Doge scrutinizes foreign contracts, but allows politically motivated foreign aid to continue flowing. This oversight is not about financial discipline, but about controlling the flow of funds to change geopolitical interests.
A ripe system of abuse
Rather than working with Congress to restore financial authorities to elected representatives, the Trump administration has acknowledged that Doge controls spending decisions. Instead of decentralized power over the state, it integrates financial surveillance under AI-driven bureaucracy. This shift creates permanent choke points for government funding.
The risks are even greater given Elon Musk's deep conflict of interest. Musk is often portrayed as an anti-establishment outsider with a libertarian streak. However, he is a major government contractor and head of federally funded businesses, including SpaceX, Tesla and AI Ventures. He really benefits from the system supervision.
The government opens the door to economic support, selective enforcement and potential self-dealing by placing federal spending under unelected techno bureaucracy. Those who design and control systems can manipulate rules to provide their own benefits.
With unelected technocrats, government contractors, and AI-led surveillance determining federal spending, Doge does not rule out government overreach. It simply redesigns it, making it more opaque, less accountable and easier to operate.
False solutions to the federal government
John Birch Society, the parent company of New American Magazine, has long argued that over 80% of the federal government operates outside the constitutional limits. The problem is not inefficiency. It's an illegal overreach. The solution is simple, free and already belongs to the law. Returning to constitutional constraints, dispersing power across the state.
True and much-needed reforms do not come from AI surveillance or bureaucratic restructuring. It comes from sticking to the Constitution and restoring governance to local and state authorities.
