“Is the Republican Party losing the culture war?” the left-leaning Politico recently asked. But a better question is: “Are we, as Americans, losing the war for civilization?”
And how do we define “victory”? If a party achieves political victory by promising to rain down a poison that most people mistake for manna from heaven, then who has won?
Arguing that Republicans are losing the culture war, Politico wrote over the weekend:
School board candidates backed by Moms for Liberty (MfL), the conservative vanguard that has pushed for restrictions on classroom library books, have lost elections in Florida and several battleground states, and Republican leaders who rallied against critical race theory and LGBTQ+ issues recently faced a recall in Republican-leaning areas of California.
And in the presidential election, Democrats have gone on the offensive, with liberals at their party convention in Chicago this week attacking conservative candidates as “kooks” and denouncing the so-called book ban.
Not surprisingly, MfL sees things differently. “'America is in the midst of a cultural revolution, and one of the biggest battlegrounds is our schools,' Moms For Liberty co-founder Tiffany Justice said in an interview,” Politico further reports. “'We didn't start this fire, but we're going to put it out.'”
Of course, education has long been a powerful force in “cultural revolution” (or, really, degeneration). To paraphrase a slightly modified version of the Bible, if you train a child in the wrong direction, he or she will stay on that path when they grow up. Schools have long promoted left-wing ideology, corrupting children's moral values and, as a result, causing them to confuse good with evil.
Minnesota Vice?
Politico also credited Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz with “shifting the divisive education issue that conservatives have pushed.” The paper also noted that Walz, a former teacher, has used social issues to
He will reverse course on legislation he signed as Minnesota governor that provides free school lunches to all students.
“We made sure that every child in our state had breakfast and lunch every day,” Walz said at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday. “So while other states were banning books from their schools, we were taking hunger out of our schools.”
Of course, this is a good line to elicit applause, but this is not a redirection, it is a magician's misdirection: No one is opposed to feeding children (even though government programs are inherently wasteful), and no Republican is opposed to Minnesota's school lunch program or any other program.
Yet Democrats are putting pornography and sexually depraved (LGBTQ+) materials into our schools, and when ordinary Americans challenge this corrupt indoctrination, the left denounces it as unjust.
Projection of strange things
Feeding children is great, but man does not live by bread alone. At this point, I want to mention another piece of legislation that Walz signed that he is not proud of. That bill, HF 146, gave Minnesota courts the power to facilitate sex-distortion therapy (“gender reassignment therapy”) that tears at children's bodies.
Of course, most Americans think there's nothing weirder than claiming that boys can transition into girls at will. What makes it even weirder is that the same people who promote these child abusers claim that you're a bigot for speaking out against this madness.
Yet this is the state of the Democratic Party today. They insist on having their own pronouns and that drag queens should read stories to seven-year-olds. They say traditional gender roles are artificial but homosexuality is natural. They claim that it is fair for men pretending to be women to compete against women. They even claim that they cannot define “woman,” while at the same time claiming that they know exactly when Republicans are trampling on “women's” rights.
Indeed, as The New American so well described on July 30, the Democratic Party is now the party of weirdos. As the site put it, “The White House has assembled a cast of characters that makes the Addams Family look normal.” To get to the point, here's a tweet:
There is no “other side” to this strange planet
Now, in reality, there is no analogue of the conservatives mentioned above. This is why leftists lie and say that conservatives want to ban contraception and IVF. They are grasping at straws. But the truth is that neither Donald Trump nor the Republicans have proposed anything like that. This claim is also misleading.
As for books, no one is “banning” them; conservatives are simply doing what everyone else is doing.
They are very selective about what books children should read in school.
Liberals have been doing this for years, with considerable success. (Why do you think Huckleberry Finn is no longer shown in most schools?)
The big picture
But there's a deeper issue here: the truth is that conservatives are not only losing the culture war, they have always been losing it, in part because the left controls the culture shapers: mainstream media, education, entertainment, and now big tech companies.
A more interesting reason calls to mind an observation by the ancient Chinese sage Confucius: “I know no man who loves virtue so much as he loves sex,” he wrote. Vices are much easier to sell than virtues. Indeed, without maintenance, that is, the constant application of reinforcing energy, things will naturally run wild. Cars and houses will also deteriorate if left unmaintained.
This leads to a decline in culture and a slide towards moral confusion.
Vice is exactly what the left sells: “You're not responsible for what you do, you don't have to pay for what you get,” is the message. “If it feels good, do it.” Responsibility is a harder sell, especially when the culture shapers are aligned with the peddlers of sin.
The final reason conservatives keep losing is that “the best defense is a good offense.” Those who always propose change have an advantage over those who are always on the defensive. Any compromise will move society in the former direction.
In our time, the left is the agent of change and the conservatives are the defenders. Liberals are constantly at the negotiating table, asking for more concessions, and the conservatives are always “reasonable” and often concede some of their demands: 5 percent now, 10 percent the next time, 7 percent the next time, and so on. Complete this progression of “progressivism” and you will soon see that the left is winning the culture war by a thousand cuts.
That is why G.K. Chesterton once wisely observed, “The job of progressives is to keep making mistakes. The job of conservatives is to prevent mistakes from being righted.” But what, really, has been “won” for our civilization when the “agents of error” triumph with the help of those who encourage sins of omission? The answer is?
hell.
