President Joe Biden has severe cognitive decline, and his staff has shielded him from members of Congress for years.
Biden's impairments are so severe that his calls are scripted.
These allegations, made by Republican Senator Mike Lee of Utah in an interview with Tucker Carlson, are not new to those who have been following Biden since before his election.
But it helps explain why Democratic Party officials, after Biden's disastrous June 27 debate with former President Trump, issued an ultimatum to Biden: either end his reelection bid or face removal from office under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.
Signs of mental illness
Lee did not use the word “dementia,” but described several instances in which he knew Biden clearly had severe cognitive impairment. Before he did, he explained to Carlson how he knew. Left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall wrote that anyone with a relative who had dementia knew Biden had dementia, even before Biden was nominated for the Democratic nomination in 2020. In his interview with Carlson, Lee said of Biden:
You can tell just from a distance. A few years ago, my mother-in-law passed away from Alzheimer's. She had the disease for nearly a decade, and as soon as she was diagnosed, her doctor explained to her what to look out for. She said that you can tell the condition is starting to get significantly worse when it starts to affect her posture, especially the way she walks. If she starts dragging her feet and kicking forward instead of walking with her usual fluidity, you can tell the condition is progressing quickly and that it's a sign of what's going on inside her mind.
I saw the same gait and posture during President Biden's first term in office. I can't remember exactly when in 2021 I noticed it, but it was sometime during his first year in office.
A neurologist recently told NBC News that Biden's wobbly gait is due to Parkinson's disease, and Lee acknowledged that Biden's physical frailty could be due to something else.
But Lee said there was “good reason” to believe Biden's cognitive abilities were declining, and that “his aides were shielding him not only from the public and an unfriendly press, but also from members of Congress.”
Lee said Trump and former President Barack Obama engaged frequently and enthusiastically with representatives and senators, but Biden did not. “They were protecting him from us,” Lee said.
“Do you work in the East Wing?”
Lee also spoke about an interaction he had with Biden when his wife attended an event for senators' spouses hosted by first lady Dr. Jill Biden.
President Biden just walked in. I think they were in one of the ballrooms. She said the president just walked in. No Secret Service or staff, just walked in. She said her instinct was, “Oh, hi, Mr. President. It's good to see you.” The president asked her, “Do you work in the East Wing?”
And she said, “No, Mr. President, I'm Sharon, Sharon Lee, wife of Senator Mike Lee.”
You see, he had me in the Senate twice, first in 2011 and then again in 2017, right before he left his position as Vice President. We interacted a lot, so she thought that would be the solution. He seemed confused, and then after a moment he said, “Do you work in the West Wing of the White House?”
“Biden's signature move.”
Shortly after, Lee said, the Democratic spouse approached Biden with her cellphone, said her brother-in-law was a “big fan” and asked if he wanted to celebrate his birthday.
“This is Biden's specialty. He's really good at this,” Lee said, describing a similar call to Republican Sen. Pat Toomey's father.
But this woman handed him the phone. The phone rang. Her brother-in-law answered, “Hello.” And he got this confused look on his face, held the phone out, hung up, and handed it back. This is very important to Joe Biden.
Media Cover-up
Lee said he was “shocked” by the “media's” cover-up of Biden's mental illness.
He said Republicans frequently discuss Biden's mental health issues and that Democrats “nod along” when debating them.
Yeah, well, you know, you have good days and you have bad days and you try to move on as quickly as you can, and that's the nature of it. They don't want to talk about it. I understand why they don't want to talk about it, but it's something that has to be talked about sometimes.
Lee said Biden's disability meant aides had to script phone conversations, and that he spoke to Biden by phone in late 2021 or early 2022 and could tell the president was reading from a script.
During a conversation about expanding two national monuments in Utah, “I could tell he was reading from a script. Not only was he reading from a script, but his voice was starting to get quieter at the end of every sentence,” Lee said.
Carlson noted that Biden's sister, Val, had told “others” during the 2020 campaign that Biden had a neurological disorder.
“Democrats are conspiring to gaslight the American people by orchestrating the election of a man who clearly has dementia,” Lal wrote in Rasmussen Reports in 2020.
“Anyone who has experienced someone close to them succumbing to this disease will no doubt see the same signs in Joe Biden,” he wrote.
But Democrats were so intent on defeating Trump that they ended up pushing Biden forward.
Post-debate coup
But after Biden's disastrous debate defeat against Trump, Democrats realized they couldn't get away with it again. They knew Trump would beat Biden in November, and Americans would realize Biden was too old and infirm to serve another four years as president.
After Biden withdrew from the race by mailing a letter written on personal stationery to X, the New York Post revealed that Democrats had forcibly removed Biden, informing him that they would invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution and declare him unable to serve.
“Democratic Party activists at the highest levels have threatened President Biden with forcibly removing him from office if he does not resign,” The Washington Post reported.
The move was a “meticulously orchestrated 'palace coup'” that had been “planned for weeks.”
But the stubborn Biden resisted it at every turn, a source close to the Biden family told The Post.
Insiders also laid bare the anger, paranoia and frustration Biden displayed as party elites surrounded and pressured him.
Part of the “elaborate” strategy to remove Biden from the race is to allow him to debate Republican candidate Donald Trump in a live televised debate in Atlanta last month.
So the only way to remove Biden was to threaten to publicly humiliate and destroy him.
