Decentralized Science (DeSci) is poised for impressive growth in 2025, fueled by utility meme coins, according to a recent report. report By MV Global.
DeSci involves integrating blockchain technology into scientific research. Its goal is to revolutionize the traditional scientific ecosystem by increasing transparency, decentralization, and collaboration.
The report emphasized that while such concepts are not new, the focus and scope of these efforts is evolving. Initially, most projects focused on research funding through decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs).
Notable examples include VitaDAO, HairDAO, and AxonDAO, which continue to be influential in the DeSci space. However, since then, the field has evolved significantly and become more diverse.
This report highlights approximately 30 active projects with a variety of use cases, including research funding, health data management, and open source research initiatives. This diversification reflects the growing maturity and adaptability of the DeSci ecosystem, it said.
DeSci's goal is to foster a more inclusive and equitable scientific ecosystem that allows researchers and communities to collaborate and innovate without the constraints of central institutions.
Practicality through memes
The report pointed to the emergence of DeSci-specific meme coins as a trend in 2024.
While most projects have had limited success, two projects, rifampicin and urolithin A, have gained notable traction and achieved market capitalizations of approximately $73 million and approximately $59 million, respectively.
These tokens will be launched via the Pump.Science platform and offer much higher utility than traditional meme coins based on MV Global's valuation.
Tokens are directly associated with scientific experiments and represent specific compounds or interventions tested on organisms such as worms, flies, and mice. These tokens act as a funding mechanism for research, provide real-time updates on the progress of experiments, and facilitate trading based on research results.
Owners of these tokens can also sell rights to successful interventions, creating a tangible link between token ownership and real-world scientific progress.
MV Global predicts significant expansion for Pump.Science in 2025, with at least 10 projects expected to exceed $100 million in market capitalization by the end of the year.
DeSci Perspective
MV Global also predicted that health data management and collaborative open source research will also see significant growth in 2025.
Projects like Hippocrat, which puts individuals in control of their health data, and ResearchCoin, which aims to create a “GitHub for scientific research,” are showing promise. Both are expected to reach a market valuation of at least $200 million by 2025.
The report also predicts a significant increase in DeSci projects, with at least 50 expected to be listed by the end of 2025. This increase reflects positive market sentiment and increased liquidity within the sector.
