A look back at Vice President and Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris' responses to the ACLU's 2019 candidate survey reveals that she may be the most left-leaning candidate the party has ever nominated for president.
She supported the pro-Communist group's odd positions on issues such as immigration, “transgender rights” and criminal justice “reform.”
Harris has apparently reversed some positions, apparently to show she has emerged from the morass of radical leftist fanaticism, but her answers to questions make it clear that she sits very much at the far end of the American left.
In fact, former president and Republican nominee Donald Trump may remind her of some things during tonight's presidential debate.
Open borders, immigration
Harris' most extreme positions have been on immigration, the detention of illegal immigrants, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
When asked if she would “provide a fair and viable path to citizenship” for the 11 million undocumented immigrants at the time, the candidate said yes. Indeed, she would make it a “priority.” She also promised to keep these undocumented immigrants in the country permanently under President Barack Hussein Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program for young immigrants. “All DACA recipients” would get work authorization. She went on to say:
We will also ensure that parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, as well as other law-abiding immigrants with ties to our communities, can apply for deferred action to protect them from potential deportation.
The ACLU also asked if the then-candidate would “commit to ending the use of ICE detention orders.” ICE issues detention orders to state and local authorities to hold illegal immigrants arrested for crimes until ICE can hold them for deportation. State and local authorities often ignore these orders.
“Yes,” she replied. “I will not hold them any more. As California Attorney General Harris pointed out, she has told state and local authorities not to honor the detentions.” She continued:
As President, I will focus on increasing public safety, not on tearing apart immigrant families, including requiring ICE to obtain warrants when they have probable cause and ending the use of detention.
When it comes to detaining illegal immigrants who cross the border, Harris has vowed to end detention.
I believe our nation's immigration detention system is out of control and that the unjust incarceration of thousands of individuals, families and children must end. I was one of the first Senators to advocate for reducing funding to ICE after President Trump was elected. I have led the effort to urge the Senate Appropriations Committee to reduce the detention budget. As President, I will fight to pass the DONE (Oversight Not Detention Expansion) Act. This bill would increase oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities, reduce detentions by at least 50%, and stop funding for the construction or expansion of new facilities.
“Transition” Surgery for Prisoners and Detainees
Even more extreme is Harris' stance on so-called transgender prisoners and illegal detainees.
The ACLU asked whether she would use her executive power to provide taxpayer-funded “sex reassignment surgery” to “transgender” inmates and illegal immigrants in prison.
“Yes,” she said. As California's attorney general, Harris would lobby the state's Department of Corrections to provide the surgery to inmates. “I support policies that ensure that federal prisoners and detainees have access to the medical care they need to transition, including surgical care, while incarcerated or detained,” she said.
Transitional care is medically necessary, and I will direct all Federal agencies responsible for providing essential health care to provide transitional care.
Release of criminals
More frighteningly, the ACLU asked whether Harris would immediately grant pardons to 25,000 federal prisoners and pressure states to release an additional 250,000 — bringing the total number of criminals to be released to 275,000.
Harris did not give specific numbers, but said she would “use broader pardon and clemency powers to overturn the convictions of people incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses.”
Their answers surprised even CNN's Erin Burnett, a Trump hater, who told CNN's Andy Kaczynski that Harris was running to the left of her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
Other Radical Positions
Interestingly, as reported by The New American, Harris said her candidacy was a “fight for American values.”
not much.
Setting aside this inconsequential truth, Harris has supported banning private health insurance, falsely claiming that illegal immigrants are not criminals, and promoting gun confiscation through a mandatory buyback program.
But perhaps her most dangerous policy proposal is “Fairness,” a plan for wealth redistribution, as The New American reported when she became the Democratic presidential nominee on behalf of President Joe Biden.
Harris has noted that equality and fairness are different, and has repeatedly called for the latter.
“Equality often implies that everyone should get the same things,” she once said.
Well, that often assumes that everyone started from the same place, but that contrasts with the idea of fairness, that everyone should end up in the same place. And if you understand that not everyone started from the same place, that some people need more, then everyone will end up in the same place. Right?
“We see the experiences that people in our country have that are not equal,” she said on another occasion.
So when we talk about the work that we're doing here together, it's about recognizing that and being guided by this principle of what we have to do in the spirit and in the interest of fairness, and putting fairness firmly at the heart of our economic policy.
After a video showing Harris' far-left policies went viral, social media erupted with claims that she is a communist.
On August 17, President Trump referred to her as “Comrade Harris” on his Truth Social network in response to a doctored photo of the Democratic candidate standing in front of a hammer and sickle flag.
He wrote the next day: “She is a Communist, always has been a Communist, and always will be a Communist.”
