Americans bought more firearms in August than they did in July, marking the fifth consecutive year that more than 1 million people bought firearms, and sales in August were up more than 8% compared to the same month last year, according to the National Firearms Industry Trade Society (NSSF, formerly the National Shooting Sports Foundation). Handgun sales were up 5% compared to August last year, and long gun sales were up 14%.

Currently, at least as far as the federal government knows, more than 82 million Americans own more than 500 million firearms.
The NSSF acknowledged that its estimate, based on the number of background checks conducted in the last month, is likely too low. Twenty-four states allow the purchase of multiple firearms with one background check, many states don't require background checks for private transfers of firearms, and federal agencies have no way of knowing how many firearms are manufactured in homes.
The August record came despite some states limiting firearm purchases to one firearm per month.
Why are Americans becoming more armed?
The reasons for the increase are many: it's election time; the Marxists who control the federal government are increasingly overtly intent on ridding the country of private firearms; gun violence continues to rise in Democrat-run cities despite the passage of increasingly stringent restrictions on Second Amendment rights; and, shockingly, gun prices are historically low, giving people on a budget the opportunity to arm themselves with the means to protect themselves.
Then there was the July assassination attempt on Donald Trump in Pennsylvania. The standard mainstream media narrative is that it was “the Secret Service's most serious security failure since the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan.” But skeptics increasingly believe that this was not a failure, but rather a planned, deliberate reduction in the Secret Service's operations in the hope that the perpetrators would permanently eliminate the risk of an outsider retaking the Oval Office in January 2025.
More and more Americans are waking up
Many people are waking up to the war Marxists are waging against freedom and are responding by taking up arms accordingly. As Mark Oliva of the NSSF put it:
The horrific crime committed by a mentally deranged young man in Georgia is reprehensible and does not represent the millions of law-abiding gun owners who responsibly exercise their Second Amendment rights every day.
The 1.2 million background checks (in August) show that constitutional rights matter, especially when it comes to the ability of responsible, law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and their loved ones from evil and those who have no respect for life or the law.
The steady rollout of more than 1 million background checks each month continues, demonstrating that Americans will choose freedom rather than have their rights taken away by the horrific acts of violent criminals.
Millions of new gun owners since January 2021
It is estimated that more than 22 million Americans have purchased a gun for the first time since the Biden administration took office in 2021. Given the deterioration of cultural and political norms, it is reasonable to assume that they all decided to do so. They are learning firsthand how important their Second Amendment right to buy, keep, carry, and potentially use a gun for self-defense is. And they will join the ranks of more than 60 million gun owners who will vote in November. Historically, gun owners have outvoted non-gun owners by double digits and voted Republican.
As Ammoland’s Dean Weingarten rightly states:
A growing population, falling gun prices, the restoration of Second Amendment rights, and political instability have all combined to create higher firearms sales and an increasingly armed American public.
