Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams gave a harsh diagnosis of Democrats on Thursday's Late Night Show with Seth Meyers.
The party, which suffered a crushing defeat in the November 5 election and lost the presidential position and both houses of Congress, must rebuild from the ground up.
We've lost our traditional base of working-class voters, and we won't recover unless we start talking about the issues that matter to them and winning their votes. Mr Williams repeatedly said the party had “insulted” these voters.
Williams' assessment echoes that of far-left speaker Bill Maher, who said the same thing about Democrats in much harsher terms.
Williams: Democrats lost working-class voters
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Rep.) said that releasing the House Ethics Committee's report on Matt Gaetz would lead to the publication of negative 411s against other Republicans, including “allegations of sexual harassment and assault.” After some preliminary discussion, including Georgia's threat, Myers is correct. I explained what went wrong.
“Democrats lost a lot of white working-class voters,” he said.
Indeed, the lead with non-white working-class voters has, as we all know, been eclipsed by Donald Trump and the Republican Party. It didn't seem like the Democratic Party under President Joe Biden had done much for working-class voters. Inflation was certainly a big problem. The same goes for messaging.
“These are tough times for Democrats,” Williams responded. “I think we need to tear it down and rebuild it.”
That will require a change in leadership, including those who think President Biden, who turned 82 two days ago, should have run again with a 37 percent approval rating.
Vice President Kamala Harris was left with a “short campaign window” when Biden resigned, thanks to a conspiracy by the ruling class and the deep state to remove him, Williams continued.
But more than that, Democrats have just insulted their core voters.
“I think it's insulting that working-class people, who Democrats have completely lost in our lifetime, claim that the economy is doing well,” Williams said.
A 12-pack of Bounty (paper towels) is $40. Rich people don't feel that way. Poor people have already switched to Sparkle during the coronavirus lockdown.
And I think it's even more insulting to tell them that Nasdaq is a gangbuster.
And Biden's most “insulting” statement was telling Americans the southwest border was safe.
“This is insulting. I think the biggest unforced mistake of the Biden administration so far has been on the border,” Williams continued.
Telling people it doesn't matter is an insult. It's probably insulting even to the working class to see immigrants getting welcome bags, debit cards, and motel rooms.
He added that the party is “going to quinoa and all of America is eating at Cracker Barrel.”
We must reach out to America again.
Myers observed that Trump has appealed to Americans with messages to work at McDonald's and ride garbage trucks, and that Democrats have lost the edge with that type of messaging.
Williams responded that the party is “reaching back to America, stopping its so-called suicide sympathies, and worrying too much about society and the minorities in the party that they can win debates but not elections.”
Williams said another election lesson is that polls have no value, and instead “voting indexes” determine election results. “They were mostly OK,” Williams said. “But the pollsters didn’t think so.”
(In fact, one pollster, Rasmussen, consistently led Trump.)
That aside, Williams concluded by reiterating his message. Democrats must appeal to working-class voters.
Maher: Are the people who voted for Trump stupid?
It's unclear how the party, with its focus on eccentric woke ideology, will be able to do that.
Maher, who frequently criticizes Democrats for their obsession with identity politics, told followers of the far-left party that apparently controlled Harris' campaign, “When you're stuck in a hole, stop digging.'' ” he said.
“Even the one concession I've heard from some people on the losing side, which is that liberals should stop saying that Trump supporters are stupid, is sort of implicitly parenthetical,” Maher said. he said last week.
I know they're stupid, but don't say that. Yes, I have bad news. They don't have a monopoly on fools. Two years after the pandemic ended, you're wearing a “Queers for Palestine” T-shirt…and a mask. And “woman” cannot be defined. In other words, people who menstruate.
Maher said the party ignored polling that showed Black voters were concerned about a president who was too liberal, not one who was too conservative. He said the party turned into a Portlandia sketch.
The problem: white progressives.
And white “progressives” are the party’s problem. Citing a survey from last year, he said more blacks and Hispanics than white “progressives” believe America is the greatest country in the world. And white “progressives” think this country is more racist than blacks and Hispanics.
The survey “asked whether governments should strengthen border security,” Maher continued. “Same result. Hispanic Americans are less tolerant of illegal immigration than Whitey.”
Voting has begun. They don't want your pity. And black people cannot afford to indulge the desire of rich white people to whip them endlessly. They just want lower prices, better jobs, and when they call the police, they just want the police to come.
Black people, they are just like us.
wakeness lost it
Mr. Maher also offered an example of how wokeness views the party. After the election, Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) denied the insanity in an interview with the New York Times.
“I have two little girls,” he said. “I don't want them running over men or former male athletes on the field, but as a Democrat you should be scared to say that.”
“Yes, therein lies the problem in a nutshell,” Maher said.
…Rep. Moulton's statement sounds reasonable to me, but his campaign manager immediately resigned in protest. Let the smart people put it as plainly as possible. Which campaign manager resigned? Yes, please let that person go.
Maher said the country needed a “centre-left” party. But it must address important issues. “A good first step toward that goal would be to make sure voters don't want to punch you in the face,” he said.
But the message from Williams and Maher is the same.
Democrats are alienating ordinary Americans who work hard for a living, are tired of high prices and open borders, and don't want their daughters assaulted on the playground by boys pretending to be girls. .
