FIFA, the international football management agency, is taking a major step into its Web3 journey by unveiling a new blockchain network compatible with Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).
Released on April 30 via the FIFA Collect FAQ, the update outlines plans to migrate FIFA Collect, the soccer body's NFT collection platform, from the Algorand Network to its future proprietary blockchain.
FIFA said:
“After migration, Pera, Defly, and other Algolan-based wallets will no longer be supported. Instead, you can connect to the FIFA collection using an EVM wallet that supports MetaMask or WalletConnect.”
FIFA has not yet confirmed a fixed launch date, but has assured users that details will be released soon. However, the transition is scheduled for tentatively by May 20th.
FIFA Collect allows soccer fans to engage in sports through digital items tied to tournaments and exclusive real-world experiences. The platform also serves as a market, with a recent update introducing new collectable bundles offering specific perks, such as VIP access to selected soccer events.
FIFA's EVM compatible blockchain
FIFA's decision to adopt an EVM compatible chain reflects a broader strategy to adopt decentralized technology and increase the flexibility of network crosswork.
According to FIFA, the initiative is a step towards enabling wallet interoperability and creating space for future innovation in digital fan engagement.
Future platforms continue to benefit from improved compatibility with major blockchain ecosystems and user functionality.
Additionally, the new blockchain provides faster performance, support for future feature rollouts, and a more scalable foundation for ongoing development.
FIFA also said the overall user experience of the blockchain platform in the future remains familiar, and users can expect incremental enhancements as new tools and options are introduced.
Meanwhile, FIFA said it will soon share more technical details about the impending blockchain network.
