The Solana blockchain community has expressed concerns about Coinbase due to the network's prolonged transaction delays.
On social media platform X, screenshots shared by several Solana users revealed that transactions on the blockchain took up to 45 minutes to process. This latency was significantly longer than that of networks such as Base, Algorand, Arbitrum, and Avalanche.
In response, Coinbase support attributed the delay to wallet maintenance or blockchain issues, suggesting that Solana's infrastructure was the root cause.
This explanation sparked frustration within the cryptocurrency community, with some members accusing Coinbase of downplaying Solana's features in favor of the Base network.
Solana is the third largest blockchain network after Bitcoin and Ethereum, and Base is Ethereum's layer 2 network founded by the US-based cryptocurrency trading platform.
Solana community reaction
Prominent figures within the Solana ecosystem were quick to address these claims.
Mert Mumtaz, CEO of Helius Labs, a Solana-focused RPC provider, explained that Coinbase's internal index system, not Solana's infrastructure, was responsible for the delay.
Austin Federa, head of strategy at Solana, echoed this sentiment. He denied Coinbase's explanation, emphasizing that the delay was due to internal technical issues at the US-based exchange. he said:
“Clear communication is very important, but this misses the point… This issue has nothing to do with the Solana network, rpcs, etc. This is a boring old internal system issue on the exchange’s part. .”
Additionally, a community note was also quickly added to Coinbase's support statement highlighting that the exchange had been facing unexplained Solana delays for months.
The memo also compares blockchain performance metrics, showing that Solana's time to finality (TTF) is 12 seconds, significantly faster than Base and Arbitrum's 16 minutes.
Coinbase solves the problem
Coinbase acknowledged on its status page that the platform experienced delays in processing Solana transactions, but explained that the issue had been resolved as of November 28th.
Similarly, Andrew Allen, a protocol specialist at Coinbase, also confirmed that the issue had been resolved. He said:
“In summary, the Coinbase indexer issue impacting Solana sending and receiving was resolved by 5am this morning. The UI did not update automatically. However, we have now identified the underlying issue and the UI fix. Both are applied.”
Despite this resolution, some community members remained critical of the exchange, accusing it of being unfriendly to the network. However, Milkroad founder Kyle Readhead urged the cryptocurrency community to not dwell on this issue and instead appreciate Coinbase's broader contributions to the industry.
