In a further sign that Democrats want illegal immigrants to flood the country and become Democratic supporters, the California Senate has brazenly approved a bill to bribe them.
Yesterday, the Senate passed a bill that would allow illegal immigrants to apply for a program that would give them $150,000 in no-strings-attached money to help buy a home.
And what's interesting, or perhaps disturbing, is that the programs that illegal immigrants apply for are completely broken: there's no money to give out.
Get a free home
AB 1840 is one of Democrats’ favorite “money doesn’t matter even if the country is bankrupt” bills that not only siphons money from taxpayers, but also offers hefty rewards to illegal immigrants who may seek more socialism in the future.
The bill might also be called the “Illegal Immigrants Are Free to Colonize Our Nation and We'll Pay the Cost Act.” According to the bill's text:
An applicant who meets the requirements for a loan under the Home Buyer Assistance Program (including, but not limited to, any requirements imposed on the Department in administering the program by the Federal Home Mortgage Corporation, any government-sponsored enterprise, any loan servicer, any investor, or any guarantor) and who is otherwise eligible under applicable Federal and State laws will not be disqualified by the Department based solely on the applicant's immigration status.
The bill passed with a vote of 23 in favor and 11 against, with three Democrats and all Republicans voting against it.
There's one big problem: the state is bankrupt, and the program doesn't have any pesos to bribe illegal immigrants.
“The California Dream for All program in June gave 1,700 first-time homebuyers financial assistance of up to 20 percent of the home's price to help with down payments and closing costs,” Sacramento's KCRA3 reported.
But the program ran out of funding within the first 11 days of the year, a topic that was at the center of debate in the Senate on Tuesday.
Facing a budget shortfall of tens of billions of dollars, the Legislature and Governor did not allocate any funding for the program this year. To replenish the funds in the future, lawmakers and the Governor would need to approve new funding for the program in future budgets.
Like many Democratic policies, this one has major flaws, or in some cases, peculiarities.
The $150,000 loan requires no down payment and “no payments,” Center Square reported on August 27. Lucky undocumented immigrants won't have to pay a cent.
In return, the state will receive the original loan amount plus 20% of any appreciation gains when you refinance, sell or transfer your home.
It's unclear what would happen if families decided to hold on to their homes, because there are no rules about how long they can hold on to the property, meaning some types of trusts could allow them to not have to pay back the loans. Democrats argued that people who apply for the funds are paying taxes because they have to work to qualify for a mortgage, while Republicans argued that the program, which ran out of money in 11 days, is already overcrowded.
In other words, the state would make a profit when illegal immigrants sold their homes, but the program would not limit how long illegal immigrants or their descendants could own their homes. California taxpayers would foot the bill.
The bill will now be reintroduced in the state House of Representatives.
I don't have any more money
As KCRA noted, the state can't fund the program, in part because the state is facing severe financial difficulties.
The state's Legislative Analyst's Office projects a budget deficit of about $70 billion for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, a figure that will grow to about $150 billion over the next few years.
“In addition to the $68 billion budget problem we identified for 2024-2025, the state faces an annual operating deficit of approximately $30 billion,” the department reported in December.
These operating deficits represent additional budget problems that Congress will need to address in coming years, either by cutting spending, increasing revenues, shifting costs, or using reserves. Although highly uncertain, the state's deficit projections accumulate to $155 billion over the forecast period, which is significantly greater than the amount of reserves available to the state (approximately $24 billion).
So, of course, one solution to that problem is to buy homes for illegal immigrants.
The people we care about most
Predictably, critics pointed to the obvious: Americans may lose their homes, but illegal immigrants get them for free, thanks to taxpayers.
X-user George (@BehizyTweets) posted the story of a 96-year-old woman who was served an eviction notice from a senior care facility for $100,000 in back rent, but ended up paying over $200,000 to the facility's previous owners and living there until her death.
“But wait… her state Assemblyman Robert Rivas voted for a plan to give illegal immigrants $150,000 as a down payment on the home of their choice,” George wrote. “Democrats hate Americans!… Instead of taking care of our seniors, Democrats are fixated on giving free stuff to illegal criminals.”
A Marjorie Taylor Greene press release (parody) account asked the question: “How many more times do Democrats have to show you they care more about illegal immigrants than you do?”
Indeed, these districting decisions reflect Democratic priorities not just in California but nationwide.
Speaking on the left-leaning MSNBC in February, Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut said undocumented immigrants were “the people we care about most.”
